The School Curriculum

A well-tested “Anglo-Zambian” curriculum is followed at Nkhwazi and emphasis is placed on the mastery of the “Three Rs” – reading, writing, and arithmetic. Children cover the Zambia Primary Course (ZPC) in its entirety but the curriculum is greatly expanded along British lines. For example, the main reading schemes are the well known and widely used Oxford Reading Tree, Ginn 360 and Wide Range and, in Mathematics, Ginn and Nelson Material is used to augment the ZPC Scheme.

Main Subjects

The main subjects are taught by class teachers with classes divided into ability groups. There are specialist teachers for Music, Physical Education, Information Communication & Technology (ICT), Art, French, and Library. The School also employs fully qualified librarians, who are in charge of the well-stocked library and the reading schemes.

Monitoring & Examinations

Individual progress is carefully monitored and reading age tests and proficiency tests in Maths and English are regularly administered at appropriate grade levels. Formal examinations for upper primary children take place each year in July and November and, at present, all Grade 7 children sit for the Zambian Grade 7 selection examination for entry into Grade 8. Nkhwazi’s Grade 7 results are invariably amongst the very best in Lusaka.

Games and Physical Education

Physical education and swimming are taught as part of the curriculum during morning sessions. The school has excellent sporting facilities with a full-sized soccer pitch, seven-a-side soccer pitches, a tarmac netball court, a half Olympic sized pool and a smaller teaching pool for the youngest grades. There are also tennis courts, a basketball pitch, and volleyball pitches.

Nkhwazi is well known for its sporting achievements and, in recent years, has won Inter-School events at Soccer, Swimming, Cross-Country, Athletics, and Chess. The annual Inter-House Athletics and Swimming competitions are very popular with parents and children alike.

Extra-curricular Activities

An extensive programme of Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) is offered in the afternoon to pupils from Grade 3 upwards. Activities vary from the sporting to the artistic to the academic. Sporting activities include Swimming, Football, Netball, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Cricket, and Table Tennis. Other activities are Chess Club, Science Club, Art and Craft, French, Drama, Aerobic, Golf and Karate. Attendance in the afternoon is usually voluntary but it is hoped that all children will avail themselves to at least two of the offered activities.

Outside educational visits, often using the school’s own bus, feature strongly at Nkhwazi. Prominent among these are trips by Grade 5 classes to Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre near Mkushi in the Central Province, Grade 6 classes to Treetops Schools Camp in Kafue National Park.
