The School's History

Founded in 1971, Nkhwazi Primary School is one of the oldest private schools in Lusaka.

The School originally occupied premises in Joseph Mwilwa Road but, as it expanded, the 4 hectare Ituna Road site was acquired in 1974 and the school was finally brought together on the one central, secure and custom built site in 1992.

Nkhwazi has enjoyed three eras of ownership. Up until 1988, the school was run privately by its founders. In 1988 it was sold to ZCCM Ltd and, for the next decade, operated as part of ZCCM Education Services until, as part of the ZCCM privatisation programme, it was sold in September 1998 to the Lusaka Hindu Association.

Objectives

Under its new owners, the School advances confidently into the new millennium and its main objectives are:-

  • To provide a first class primary education to children of all backgrounds within the Lusaka community, which will enable them to transfer with ease to secondary schools of choice either within Zambia or abroad. (Under its development programme, Nkhwazi itself will soon be expanding up to Grade 8 and 9).
  • To offer an academically stimulating programme that will enhance the social, emotional, moral and physical growth of its pupils, thus preparing them to be world citizens in the 21st century and free of prejudices of race, culture, social background and religion.
  • To strive for excellence in all that it undertakes to do and, by maintaining strong links with other schools through such organisations as the Independent Schools’ Association of Zambia (ISAZ) to ensure the cross-fertilisation of ideas and maintenance of standards.
  • To educate the “whole child” and to pursue a high quality of education, not only in academic areas but also in artistic, cultural and sporting fields.
  • To instill social and family values into the daily lives of its pupils and to foster environmental awareness, beginning with the School itself and extending to the whole of the city of Lusaka and beyond.
